16th: Savernake Forest - After an excellent trip to Salisbury Plain we finished the evening off in the forest, with the hope of Nightjar and/or Woodcock. We missed on both accounts but we did see 2 adult and 2 young Tawny Owls - all giving great views. We heard probably another 4 birds calling. Just outside the forest at Burbage Wharf, we saw, earlier in the evening, 11 Buzzards and 4 Red Kites all together in a recently ploughed field. Quite a sight! Bob PhilpottStanton Park - This afternoon, 6 Buzzards overhead in a thermal were joined by 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls. A Hobby passed through briefly before heading northeast. Several Swifts, a pair of Swallows and House Martins over the lake. On the lake, the female Great Crested Grebe appears to be incubating eggs in the reeds and the Mute Swans took their 6 cygnets for a swim around the lake. Two of the three juveniles from last year still remain on the lake much to the annoyance of the cob who has been busy for weeks now trying to move them on. Difficult to see but at least 5 ducklings with a pair of Mallards. A pair of Reed Buntings present and both Sedge and Reed Warblers singing. Martin Adlam

14th: Wanborough - Jackdaw flew from the lawn into a pine tree where it caught a Greenfinch took it to the ground, killed and disjointed it, before carrying the carcase away. 12th: The Ridgeway - Seen and heard, whilse cycling between Chiseldon and Ashdown Park, 3 Yellow Wagtails, 5 Corn Buntings, 6 Yellowhammers, several Whitethroats, Skylarks and Blackcaps, lots of Linnets. A Lesser Whitethroat eventually revealed itself and nearby were Chiffchaffs, a Goldcrest and a Willow Warbler. A Little Owl just a bit further on was a nice surprise. At Hailey Wood, 3 Marsh Tits (one carrying food), more Blackcaps, Goldcrests and Chiffchaffs, and a Red-tailed Bumblebee. A Kestrel flew through the trees and 3 or 4 Song Thrushes were having a vocal battle. There was a good showing of Bluebells in the wood, but elsewhere, a poor showing of butterflies: a single, female Orange-tip was the only one seen. A Short-eared Owl flew across my path just as I was recovering from climbing up the east side of Charlbury Hill. I managed to catch my breath enough in time to get a few shots. A Sparrowhawk appeared, quite close behind me, at the same time. (A 3-owl day for me as I saw the local Tawny Owl very early this morning on a neighbours roof.) Likewise, 2 Mallards have placed themselves on the field opposite the Dick Lovett dealership in Wootton Bassett Road about 10 days ago and busy eating the grass, alongside many Rabbits, Magpies, gulls and corvids. Also seen, 2 Roe Deer, a Frog croaking in a pond, and at the entrance to the Grand Avenue, swathes of glorious cuckoo flower.
