Mouldon Hill Country Park is a recent development close to the Haydon area in the Northwest of Swindon; the funding of the project being aided by a lottery grant. The main aim of the park is to provide a recreational area for the 10,000 or so new houses in the Northern Development Area.

As well as a small lake there are footpaths and trackways all around and it is possible to walk right around the larger area, incorporating many of the surrounding fields. The River Ray runs alongside the western edge and there is a footpath adjacent to it, although it is heavily overgrown in places. One future project is to link up with the restored section of the old Swindon & Cricklade Railway, a mile or so further north, which in turn will form part of a much longer stretch going from Cirencester to Swindon, terminating in Mouldon Hill. It is also hoped that a five mile section of the Wilts & Berks Canal will also be restored.

Mouldon Hill

An early morning start in spring is a good time to visit, where a decent number of birds can be seen in a relatively small area. Warbler species are particularly prominent, with Sedge, Reed, Garden, Willow and the skulking Grasshopper Warbler all being recorded at the site. Also to be seen: Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Lesser and Common Whitethroat and the much rarer Dartford Warbler has also visited in the past. The fields around the top of the hill are also worth exploring, with the typical species present. The ever decreasing Cuckoo may perhaps be seen - or heard.

The main entrance is off Thamesdown Drive, opposite the Tawny Owl pub. A parking area is currently under construction, although progress has been delayed due to the presence of the protected Great Crested Newt. You can squeeze one or two cars just outside the entrance or alternatively park in the nearby side streets and walk through the underpass.
